Bike Safety

Be alert at all times.

It doesn't take much to fall over and break a collarbone or a wrist. Call out what you see or if you have to slow or stop suddenly. It gives the person on your wheel a chance to react and stay upright.

August 22nd Fundraiser for Jenny

The BRATS are organising the next fundraiser for Jenny. It will be held at the Icebergs on August 22nd.

Bevan to Roth!

While almost everyone else was running around Sydney, Bevan was putting in the work for Roth where he'll race for the first time this year.

Check out what he's doing on his new blog

Newcastle Duathlon

Duathlon Returns to Newcastle

The Newcastle Port Corporation Australian & Oceania Duathlon Championships will return to Newcastle on Sunday 24th August 2008. This is despite the eleventh-hour cancellation of last year’s event due to extreme weather conditions and the wash-up of the Pasha Bulker on the Nobby’s Beach race course.

In 2005 the city demonstrated that it is the perfect host for this type of sporting event, with the hugely successful World Championships. The tough Duathlon course around the Foreshore and beaches proved to be world-class, and had excellent ratings from the elite competitors.

New Event Manager for 2008 Mark Emerton will coordinate the events with a goal of ensuring the Duathlon remains in Newcastle long-term. The event is recognised by the International Triathlon Union. The Championships will attract hundreds of competitors vying for the title. Male and female competitors will compete in age groups from 16 through to 80+ over a 10km run, 40km bike and final 5km run. This event will not only focus on the elite and seasoned athlete but will offer shorter races for kids and beginners. Race information will be available at www.eliteenergy.com.aufrom 16th May including early bird entry fees.

Duathlon Series

2008 TriNSW Duathlon Series

Many members have contacted the office pleading for events over the winter months. We have listened, and reinvigorated the 2008 TriNSW Duathlon Series, which will be conducted as follows:

1. Canberra - Sunday 20th July

2. Newcastle - Sunday 24th August

3. Kangaroo Valley - Sunday 28th September

All events are about a month apart, and spread over the picturesque regions of NSW. Race 1 will partner a race of the ACT Duathlon Series, and Race 2 will partner the Aust Duathlon Champs. The TriNSW Duathlon Series is a Pointscore Series, with State Winners judged over all three events rather than a single Championship. Stay tuned for more details as they are finalised.

TriNSW membership

TA and TriNSW Membership for 2008/09

Many Clubs and Members have enquired about the introduction of rolling membership. The official response from TA is that to change the whole membership structure from a financial year to a rolling year will require a complete overhaul of the national database and the cost will be substantial. TA’s contract with their current provider expires in June 2009, although they are tendering the business in the next couple of months. The rolling membership concept needs to be part of a broader recruitment and retention strategy which has been delegated to the TA Marketing Manager. There is support for the rolling membership concept within TA (and VERY STRONG support within TriNSW), however TA needs to consider the matter in greater detail.

In the mean time, membership for the 2008/09 financial year will again open early on 1st June – giving new members 13 months of membership for the price of twelve. Details of membership benefits and the 2008/09 fee structure will be available for perusal on the website at that time. The TriNSW Board has increased some membership categories only marginally (CPI), whilst family membership fees remain the same as 2007/08, and other categories such as juniors and Technical Officials have actually been reduced.

TriNSW history

Help needed with TriNSW History – seeking old Tri magazines, minutes and anecdotes

Triathlon NSW is approaching 25 years!! Despite triathlon’s brief history, a lot of State information has been lost in flood damage at Old Sports House. With the racing season behind us, I'd like to update our website with relevant pieces of history. We have appointed John Smith as the Honorary Historian. He is gathering relevant information to help us celebrate our quarter century, including the following organisational history:

· Office Bearers

· Life Members

· Inaugural Clubs

· Club Champions

· State Champions - Sprint, Olympic, Duathlon, etc

· State Representatives

· Athlete of the Year, Clubman of Year, Volunteer of Year, etc

We realise this is not an overnight project. If any Members or enthusiasts have archived records (hard copy or electronic), I'd love to get my hands on them temporarily. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The website records will be updated and presented to the wider community to indicate what a fantastic sport we are. After the records have been collected and published, we intend gathering anecdotes and other written/ photographic material to produce a historical manuscript (in booklet form perhaps). But that is another project, let's progress one step at a time. Please contact me ceo@trinsw.org.au if you can assist or you know a likely candidate with our history at their fingertips. Many thanks.

Oz Olympic Team

Triathlon Australia has recently announced the six athletes who have been chosen as part of the Nomination Team for Triathlon for Australia for the 2008 Olympic Games.

WOMEN - Emma Snowsill, Emma Moffatt and Erin Densham (Reserves - Felicity Abram and Annabel Luxford)

MEN - Brad Kahlefeldt, Courtney Atkinson and Greg Bennett (subject to meeting ITU requirements)

As outlined in TA’s Olympic nomination criteria, the Nomination Team will not be presented to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for consideration for selection until the beginning of July. The nomination team have continuing obligations of ongoing fitness, injury and illness monitoring between now and 4 July 2008.

TA and TriNSW congratulate the six athletes above on joining an illustrious group who will represent Australia at an Olympic Games. We are particularly enthused for NSW hero Brad Kahlefeldt, and Erin Densham who, although moving interstate, learnt her craft in NSW and is still a member of Macarthur Tri Club.
