Dry and Hot Ahead

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Australia, which suffered its worst drought in a century in 2002, may have below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures in some parts of the nation in the next three months amid the threat an El Nino may develop.

There's a between 60 percent to 80 percent chance of above- average temperatures over most of the country in the three months ending November, the Bureau of Meteorology said today on its Web site.

The chance of above-average rainfall is below 40 percent over much of the country, excluding an area in southwest Western Australia state, it said.

Watch the scale

Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Americans who carry just a few extra pounds at age 50 raise their risk of dying 20 to 40 percent compared with those who are at the optimal weight, a study says.

The findings, gathered over 10 years, come from a study of more than 500,000 members of the AARP, the organization for older Americans. The increased risk was most pronounced among overweight people who didn't smoke, eliminating another major risk factor, the researchers said.

The risk from carrying 10 to 20 extra pounds has been debated for years in medical circles. While no one disputes the fact that the obese are more likely to develop diabetes, heart disease and cancer, the danger from a few pounds that gradually creep on with age has been less clear, researchers said.

``We know that being obese causes all sorts of health risks to increase,'' said Lawrence Cheskin, director of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center in Baltimore. ``What is hard to demonstrate is that for people who are not extremely heavy, there is a risk of actual death.''

Gatlin gets eight years

Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Olympic 100-meter champion Justin Gatlin agreed to an eight-year ban from track and field events, avoiding a lifetime suspension in exchange for providing information that may assist the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency in its effort to eradicate drugs from the sport.

Gatlin, a 24-year-old American, forfeits the world record in the 100 meters he shares with Jamaica's Asafa Powell. Gatlin tied the mark in May, when he was timed in 9.77 seconds.

Gatlin agreed to the accuracy of the laboratory results that showed he tested positive for testosterone or its precursors at a meet in April, the agency said in a statement. He agreed the positive test constitutes a doping violation, the agency said.

Ultimate Team Challenge

X-Tri will host a long distance triathlon for individuals over the same course to be used for the 2006 Canberra LD Triathlon World Champs (So all Aussies can get a chance to compete on this course).

It will comprise a 2km Aqua Shop swim, a 94 km Capital Tourism bike ride and a 20km CBD Parkland run.

“The Ultimate Aussie Team Challenge is a winner take all format event, so the fastest male, female and mixed team will each win $1,500-00 making for $4,500-00 on offer, plus primes for the team entering the Challenge and every team is entered in an open category!”

“And, additionally we’ll be looking to pay a $500-00 premium to the fastest outright team to beat 4-hours on this course!”

“No event within Australia has offered this incentive before; nor has anyone designed an event specific to individual team multisport athletes and triathletes.

“Teams may consist of any combination of professional or amateur athletes. They simply need to be willing to take on the Ultimate Aussie Team Challenge distance and the distances lend themselves to many multisports specialist athletes."

TRI NSW new president

NEW CEO at Triathlon NSW

Posted:: 26 Jul 2006

I’m delighted to report that we have secured the services of Peter Tate, who will join Tri NSW as Chief Executive Officer on 28 August.

Peter, who holds a surveying degree from the University of Newcastle, has always been a keen sportsman, playing soccer, cricket, rugby league, hockey and baseball. He has held all imaginable club positions over a sporting administrative career spanning two decades, and has been employed in the Sport & Rec industry since post-graduating with a Master of Sports Management at UTS.

Stints include Sports Officer at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton, and Sport & Rec QLD Regional Adviser for a vast geographical area in Central Qld. Returning to NSW as CAMS State Manager for two years, Peter was responsible for 600+ motor sport events annually and the sustainability of 107 affiliated clubs. Most recently Peter has been employed by the Federal Govt to develop regional projects across the Sydney metropolitan basin. This role involved funding liaison with Local Government Authorities and state/regional sporting organisations, specifically where sporting infrastructure projects are concerned.

Additionally, Peter has been a Board Member of the NSW Sports Federation since 2003 (alongside TA’s CEO Andrew Hamilton) and has chaired the Officials Advisory Committee during that period of time.

Peter brings vigour, passion and vast experience to Tri NSW. Although his only taste as a competitor has been at a novice Triathlon in Mackay, I am confident that Peter will make a substantial contribution to our sport.

TRI NSW membership cards

The first membership card run was done on Friday the 28th July. Membership who joined prior to the 15th July should receive their membership cards sometime this week.

The next card run will be submitted today (Aug 1) for members who joined between 15th July - 31st July. These members should receive their membership card either later this week or early next week.

Landis Results Due This Week
Gary Klein, From LA Times Staff and Wire Reports
August 2, 2006

Tour de France champion Floyd Landis, whose initial doping tests turned up positive, gets another chance to clear his name when a second set is expected to be released Saturday.

However, the 30-year-old cyclist and his lawyer have previously acknowledged that they expect the "B" sample to show the same elevated ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone found in the "A" sample last week.

Michael Henson, a spokesman for the cyclist, confirmed Tuesday that a urine test on Landis after the tour's 17th stage turned up an 11:1 ratio — far above the 4:1 limit allowed. A 1:1 ratio is average.

The "A" sample was provided July 20 by the cyclist after he raced his way back into contention by winning a tough Alpine leg with a ride that will long be remembered by race fans.

Landis has insisted that his body's natural metabolism — not doping — caused the elevated result, and said he would undergo further tests to prove it.

But a New York Times report cast doubt on that defense. The newspaper cited a source from the UCI, cycling's international federation, saying that a second analysis of the "A" sample, called a carbon isotope ratio test, had detected synthetic testosterone in Landis' system.

North Face Endurance 50

Dean Karnazes seeks to redefine human limits in The North Face® Endurance 50
The venerable marathon has assumed a sacred place in the heart of athletics. 26.2 miles. More than 45,000 strides. Agony and euphoria. Some have described it as experiencing all of life’s emotions in one, five-hour span.

And Dean will attempt to run 50 of them: 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 consecutive days.

Known as The North Face Endurance 50 (“E50”, for short), this test of human fortitude will begin on September 17 at the Lewis & Clark Marathon in St. Louis, Missouri, and conclude 50 days later in New York’s Central Park, at the finish line of the legendary New York City Marathon.

Dean will be running roughly 4:30 to 5:00 hour marathons, that translates to about 10:00 to 11:40 minute miles.

North Face Sponsorship

SAN LEANDRO, California—The North Face, the world’s premier supplier of authentic, innovative, and technically advanced outdoor apparel, equipment, and footwear, today announced sponsorship of the 2006 Kiehl’s Badwater Ultramarathon. The 135-mile race, known to be the most demanding and extreme running race in the world, takes the toughest endurance athletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers non-stop from Death Valley, California, to Mount Whitney, California, with temperatures projected to reach up to 135 degrees.

The 2006 Kiehl’s Badwater Ultramarathon marks The North Face’s first year as a sponsor of the event. Earlier this year, The North Face unveiled its first-ever endurance athlete team and its endurance-inspired collection of fast-and-light technical apparel and footwear which will hit stores this September.
