Fare-well Darren and Family

As already has been expressed by Damo, farewell to Darren and his family ..

We look forward to seeing you running around the park again - any park for that matter - in the not too distant future.

Basso and Ullrich Out of Tour

The Tour de France's two leading favourites, Ivan Basso and Jan Ullrich, have been excluded from this year's race because of their implication in a Spanish doping scandal.

The event will include the Saucony Australian Duathlon Championship race of 10km run / 40km bike / 5km run and will be supported by the Duathlon Dash race of 2.5km run / 12km bike /1km run. Tour Notes - Vinokourov/Basso

Vinokourov Out

The sport's biggest drugs scandal since the Festina team were expelled from the 1998 Tour de France has taken another twist after the Astana team of the Kazakh star Alexandr Vinokourov were denied a place in this year's race due to their involvement in a major doping inquiry.

Basso Wants Double

Apart from yearning to be the rider who emerges from the shadow of Armstrong Basso also plans to defy the American's insistence that all energy should be poured into an unremitting assault on the Tour. Basso, instead, is trying the far trickier feat of winning both the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the same year - requiring him to maintain near-perfect form and fitness for 10 consecutive weeks.

Roth on Sunday

The Franconian hamlet of Roth, Germany is readying for the fifth anniversary running of the independent Quelle Challenge Roth, the world’s largest long-course triathlon, on Sunday, July 2.

Reid retires

Triathlete sat down with Peter Reid in May for an exclusive interview and has the full story surrounding his decision to retire in the August 2006 issue, which mails to subscribers on June 27 and will be available on newsstands on July 18.

If you go to Triathlete magazine's website you can read a decent story on the retirement decision.

(A bit of old news actually! But here better late than never.)

23 June 2006

Capricon 1/2

Just a quick catch up as the field approaches 30% full, to let you all know we're still taking entries (we've had many calls and email about this!) and will do so until the nominated closing date for entries or 600 competitors, which ever comes first. Yes we know that bookings at the Resort are nearing 100% full (talk to Tri Travel REAL soon, and book those air-tickets now) but

Right now the entry stats are as follows:

There are around 132 male entries and 55 females in 20 age group and the open categories.

Leading the field right now are some top age group entries and also some top open competitors in Australian International, Luke Bell, last year's runner up Cameron Watt and Sydney based Adam Dimech, while the female field should be headed by Western Australia's Angela Milne, NSW's Belinda Halloran, Tasmania's Amelia Cox, and the Northern Territories Alison Keane are all looking at competing this year.

TDF Screen

TOUR de FRANCE at CityBikeDepot

We figured that we have a massive projector screen in store and the tour highlights are on SBS from 6pm till 6.30. So rather than run home to the small screen join us with the big screen showing SBS's tour highlights each night from Monday 3rd July to the grand finale in Paris.

There shall be a gathering at the store for the L'Alpe D'Huez stage on Tuesday 18th July LIVE from 11pm till whenever it finishes. We shall have some French midnight snacks and drinks on the night for what will be a tour defining stage.

Demo Day - July 9th

The next road demo day on Sunday July 9th is proving to be one not to be missed. It is a great opportunity to do a side by side comparison of some of the best bikes on the market and really tell the difference between them.

We shall have the new Cannondale System 6 to play on alongside the SIX-13 and Synapse bikes. LOOK will have the 486, 585, 555 and 565 all ready to try with a variety of either Shimano and Campagnolo components.

The new SRAM will be equipped on a sweeet road bike so you can test the latest offerings from the American component supplier. The double click shift is a lot simpler that it sounds and the levers have a uniquely ergonomic feel.

For those who have already registered we shall be forwarding full details through next week. To register please forward us an email on info@citybikedepot.com.au and we shall send you the details. Cost will be $10 for a day insurance.

CityBikeDepot Sale

Ok so we have resisted the temptation to go on sale every 2nd week but the time has come to share some of the wholesalers specials with you and move some of the excess in store.

The sale is only on for 3 days and will happen only ONCE a year as we cannot afford to do this very often.

As email listers you get first bite at the sale 6.00pm Wednesday Night the 28th June till Friday 30th June. With Cannondale Sample clothing and ex-warehouse stock from Deuter, Serfas, Syncros, Giordana and Hayes stock being bought in. Also a full 15% - 50% off all clothing, parts and accessories in store and some just crazy clearout pricing on bikes.

How about Moore!

Team Leader Damo

Further to John's e-mail and on behalf of Lisa and Dingo...

In the past while John has been away we tend to have people ride with us that don't usually week in week out.
So please be aware as John mentioned if the ride says easy it will be easy.

Also we won't be changing where we ride and where we stop.

Please make sure you have lights both front and back and that you carry a couple of spares.
Calling AND pointing holes is a must. Pointing must be done as people at the moment are wearing things to keep their ears warm and it's sometimes hard to hear.
The person at the back - This person's role is just as important as the 2 up the front. Keep your eye out for park cars coming up and also when the group has to go over a lane (ala as we've past the SuperCentre - gone through the lights and go onto the main road and have to merge into one lane).

You must wait for the car to past the whole group before calling over.
Taking a lane is less dangerous than going single - if you're at the back and there a few cars coming up behind - Be confident when you signal and take the lane.

Jan in form for tour

Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile) posted a spectacular win in the Tour of Switzerland after overturning a 50-second deficit on yesterday's final stage, a 30-kilometre time trial in Berne.

The German clocked the fastest time of the day to win the stage by 23 seconds from the Australian Cadel Evans (Davitamon Lotto) and was more than a minute faster than overnight leader Koldo Gil (Saunier Duval).

That gave Ullrich the overall win and confirmed that he is in shape to challenge Ivan Basso (CSC) for next month's Tour de France.

Macca going to Europe

From a June 7th entry on his site:

I am in Australia for about 1 week before flying up to Europe to compete in the UK Half Ironman and then do the Quelle Roth Challenge again. This should be a tough Ironman but is one of my favorite races in the World.

I am really looking forward to getting back to Germany and having a hit out again. I will take about 1 month off again after Roth before focusing my entire attention on Ironman Hawaii success again.

I am really motivated this year to be successful in Hawaii and with a new racing suit designed specifically for hot humid weather, I am really eager to get back out on the Queen K Hawaii and put together a solid race.

Coffee

DRINKING coffee could help protect you from liver disease caused by alcohol, research shows.

People who drink one cup of coffee a day are 20 per cent less likely to suffer alcoholic cirrhosis than those who drink none.

And the protective effect increases with the more coffee you have: those who drink two or three cups a day are 40 per cent less likely to suffer cirrhosis, while people who drink four or more cups are 80 per cent less likely to get the disease.

The findings were conducted by researchers at the Kaiser Permanente health care organisation in California, and published in the US journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

Elixr - Swimming Sessions

There is speculation that someone amongst the group is training or about to start training others how to swim at Elixr's Bondi Junction location. Still waiting confirmation.

Sport is fleeting ...

After an epic 22-day climb up a near-vertical Himalayan peak, an Australian couple in their 40s took just two minutes to "fly" back to base camp and smash the world record for the highest BASE jump in history.

With the aid of their specially designed wing suits, which mimic the way a sugar glider flies, the pair were hitting horizontal speeds of almost 200 kmh and vertical speeds of 50 kmh.

Winter outlook

There is a moderate shift in the odds towards below average winter (June-August) rainfall across parts of northern New South Wales, the Bureau of Meteorology announced today. For the rest of the state, the chances of accumulating at least average rain during winter are between 40% and 50%.

The pattern of winter rainfall odds is largely a result of above average temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. Conditions in the Indian Ocean are near normal and have little influence on the outlook.

For the June to August period, the chances of above median rainfall are between 30 and 40% over much of northern New South Wales, north and east of a line from Sydney through Dubbo to Bourke, except for some coastal areas (see map). This means that below average falls have a 60 to 70% chance of occurring.
