Tony Did It

Hi Everyone!!

Well Tony Dingo did it yesterday!!

He placed 2nd in his age group and will be accepting the 2nd spot for his age group for Hawaii Ironman at 10am Malaysian Time or 1pm our time today!!!

He is ecstatic as you all know it has been his dream for a long time. He does not have his phone on him but he is at his travelling email, copied on this email above.

It all came down to the run where everybody started dropping like flies……Tone said he was running for his life for the last 5km, as 3rd place was 200meters behind him, his heart rate reached new heights at 228 for the last 2kms, he gave it everything he had!!!

Malaysia Ironmanlive

Apparently there may be some limited coverage of the race on ironmanlive .. no splits on the bike or the run though .. just total swim, total bike and total run times .. at least that's what we heard from the timing guy yesterday!

As noted in the previous message, the race start will be between 7-7:30, we'll know more after the briefing on Saturday.

Malaysia Friday

We had a final swim on the course this morning. All the flags are in the water. It's a deep water start .. no feet on the ground here.

T1 is easy and should be fast.

The actual race start time is still a bit up in the air. It won't be before 7am and we've heard talk it may be as late as 7:30am because it's not really light here much before 7:15am.

It's carbo night tonight but we've been told to eat before as there's quite a procession of dignitaries and local customs to welcome us to Langkawi. We've been rotating between a Japanese restaurant and a Thai restaurant (great chocolate milkshakes - Tony gives them five-star ratings!)

I can't say enough about how friendly the locals and the organizers and volunteers have been. In addition to have kids sweeping out part of the bike course yesterday, this morning there were guys out with leaf-blowing machines on the main road.

Malaysia Race Numbers

Dingo is 64

Tim is 224

We went for our final bike ride this morning, 15k out and 15k back. A bit of a headwind on the way back into town helped keep us cool.

We both are feeling strong and ready.

A lot more athletes arrived today including Charlotte and Steve Firth as well as Jason Shortis. The hotel is crowded with fit looking people.

M-Dot Malaysia Wednesday

We had a bit of a spin on the bike course yesterday, 30km as our program said. And today we ran on the run course, which overlaps the bike course.

Both Dingo and I are happy with the courses as there is a general uphill out of town and then downhill back into town.

The swim course has yet to be set up in the bay, but it has been changed to a two lap course.

The bike is three laps and the run is four -- as earlier advertised.

The slots were allotted late yesterday, with two in Tony's age group and three in mine.

Thursday is the official registration and we should have more details about what lies ahead in the next few days.

Oh ya. It is hot here .. and it appears the hottest part of the day is about 4pm .. so the key will be to finish fast!!

Weekend Review

well done all on the w end...an exstremely hot couple of days where nutrition is everything and that includes rehydrating after sat ride...

on sunday some exellent performances on the run....i know it hurt but it will get better i promise u...u need to be tough to go through ironman at your fastest pace both physically and mentally....this is just preparing and conditioning u for that day....like wendo said ironman actually feels easier sometimes..i,m not sure she meant it because its all about getting everything rite...pace nutrition and strategy......if it goes rite u,ll have a good day....if u decide to drift off your plan with pace and nutrition it turns ugly......so practice practice prractice your pace and nutrition at every oppertunity and in different situations so u learn adjustments (eg weather)

lastly re pace....an example of a very very common thing that happens all the time every year and with every newcomer

damo and i were running in our race pace and all the sudden heard 2 peoples footsteps coming up so fast it wasn,t funny, before that they were a fair few hundred metres back.....NEVER EVER EVER DO THAT....ALWAYS DO "YOUR" PACE.....KNOWONE ELSES

in a long run u will blow....and blow they did....please all learn from these mistakes....this long stuff is a race of patience,u do your pace and wait for others to die

Duty Free

Dingo, Margreet and I arrived here a bit earlier today. The flight from Sydney to KL was a breeze in about 7:50. It was the 7 hour wait for the connecting flight to Langkawi that just about put us out for the rest of the day.

Bikes are together and the search has begun for air cannisters!

One thing is sure, this is a beautiful spot. And yes, it is H O T. But it's the same for everyone and we have a few days to adjust as best we can. And our training resumes tomorrow morning.

16 Feb 2006

Malaysia

Dingo, Margreet and I head north and then west on Saturday night, arriving on the island of Langkawi via KL about midday on Sunday.

We have a week to enjoy the heat and humidity. As I type this note, there are 301 participants listed on the race website. There are 35 spots for Kona, though we don't yet know how they will be divided among the age groups.

http://www.ironmanlangkawi.com.my/index.htm

The course, as we know it now, is a one-lap swim in Kuah Bay, then three laps on the bike and then four laps on the run.

We'll keep everyone in the loop as best we can.

From the Associated Press:

The number of fatal and nonfatal shark attacks worldwide dropped last year, continuing a five-year trend, the director of the International Shark Attack File said today.

There were 58 total attacks in 2005, compared to 65 in 2004, while the number of fatal attacks dropped from seven to four, said George Burgess, director of the shark attack program, which is housed at the University of Florida's Museum of Natural History.

In contrast, there were 78 attacks in 2000, 11 of them fatal, the record year for attacks.

Surfers were the most frequent victims last year, accounting for 29 attacks, followed by 20 attacks on swimmers and waders and four attacks on divers.

Murray Sets PB

Happy to report a PB of 15minutes over my previous long course races. Did 4.39 with a drafting penalty (another story), had a great run, not as good as Emily who ran me down, but finished and collapse with massive cramps and ended up on IV drip (1.5 L). Don’t know what happened but salt intake must’ve been too low. The rain can deceive you I’ve learnt.

Funny thing the doctor asked what I was drinking. All they wanted to know is what’s in High 5 and why didn’t I drink Enervit. In my daze I said” Coz it tastes like sh*t!!!

Have to say saw Chris Waterhouse out there running, that guy is scary…well done Chris, awesome run!!!!!

Well done to all the Hillbillies I saw some good races being had out there!!!!

I have a bike

I'd like to say THANKS VERY MUCH to Ollie and Cheeky Monkey. A stellar effort on Friday has resulted in me having a new bike for Malaysia.

An even bigger THANKS goes to Margreet who spent countless hours driving around the city, visiting various bike shops and receiving enough attitude for the next decade in search of an integrated 1 inch headset.

The Caffeine Debate

Some of you may already have seen, though I just saw this week:

Researchers in Switzerland found that drinking coffee can limit blood flow to the heart while exercising.

The caffeine in just two cups of coffee can prevent the heart from getting the amount of oxygen needed during physical activity, reports HealthDay.

"Whenever we do a physical exercise, myocardial blood flow has to increase in order to match the increased need of oxygen. We found that caffeine may adversely affect this mechanism. It partly blunts the needed increase in flow," says Dr. Philipp A. Kaufmann, of the University Hospital Zurich and Center for Integrative Human Physiology.

The scientists studied 19 people who were daily coffee drinkers. Thirty-six hours prior to the study, the participants did not ingest any caffeine. PET scans were used to measure their heart blood flow before and after exercising.

The caffeine did not affect blood flow in those who did not exercise. However, participants who took caffeine tablets before exercising were shown to have a 22 percent slowdown in heart blood flow.

The study appears in the Jan. 17 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Let it snow ..

Whistler broke the record for the snowiest month the mountains have seen since weather data collection began 25 years ago. January’s total snowfall accumulation was 469 cm (15.6 feet).

Treadmill Tim

I haven't sent in any of my last three weekly skeds to the coach. He knows it and now everyone else does. I'm okay with it. I have no guilt. Of course I'd like to have trained more - I always want more.

That being said, I have done the hard work to the best of my ability. I haven't stopped training though it hasn't been as consistent as I earlier planned for several reasons.

I also haven't lost my motivation for Malaysia. I'm still fit -- though there's nothing like a tough session to ease my mind.

This morning was my longest run ahead of the race. As there was a touch of snow on the ground, and some ice too, I opted to run inside.

Three hours later, I'd run 21.9 miles, or 35.3 kilometres. Putting one foot in front of the other and going nowhere fast on a treadmill at a health club. It was a good session for me -- though I was looking for a little bit of Red Bull as the end approached.

What I can say is, give the guy who invented the iPod a big hug from me.

Response to JH

Ok, observations are interesting. How about some real life information? These points and questions are for you John.

1. How often do you stretch? How long? How many stretches? How about having a stretching session midway through an easy Thursday bike after a long run Wednesday to give us some ideas and to review our technique? Or at another time?

2. What is your post training/post race nutrition? What do you do to rehydrate and to replenish carbs and protein? And we need some non High Five options as most of us don't have ready access to the supply that you have.

3. In taking caffeine while training, how much when I'm tired? How often during a training session? To simulate what would happen in a race? So once started, don't stop. Or space it out more - instead of caf gel after caf gel, can I go caf/regular/regular/ caf/regular/regular etc . Keeping in mind that the caf gels are expensive and some of us can't afford to go through box after box of caf gels. There is a budget that most of us have to live with.

4. Consistent training is the key. We all know it, that's why we train with you and the group. However sometimes life DOES interfere. Most of us have jobs that require travel or early morning meetings or late meetings, or both, and so sometimes it's not possible to do a session. And then there are family obligations.

Most people don't realize that you are busy with High Five, I know, but you also have more flexibility with your day than most of us. Help us find a way to train more effectively. We all want to succeed.

5. Race day nutrition. Ok, some people may not be using proper nutrition in a race - perhaps most of us. So why not give us better guidance before a long training session - what are you going to eat this Saturday for instance? Perhaps add that to the weekend training sked. Do you carbo load before a heavy weekend of training? What do you eat for breakfast before a 160k pacey ride and during the ride?

And better yet, how about telling us exactly what you ate and drank and the pace you raced at on the weekend? Or getting the same from those in the group who had superb performances and then analysing them for all of us? This is the type of information that I would like to know.

JH Observations

(spelling corrected; no naming of names!)

For those of you doing the long stuff eg port macquarie which is only about eight weeks away, new zealand, malasia, arizona or anywhere else, below are some observations and tips.

Please read and try to work out if this effects you. If it does try to take corrective action before it bites you. The training now can be pretty tough and this advice is there to help.

1)with the tough miles and intensities now here you need to massage and stretch extremely often or you'll be injured in no time

2)after every session you need to rehydrate and replace carbs asap and get the protein in

3)never think you can't make the next session, you can if you allow yourself too

4)never think you can't go hard if you're tired. warm up well, take some caffeine if you need too, then get a good workout. use other people to get yourself going and try to train with others

5)consistent training is the key, don't miss sessions, don't make excuses to the coach because he's heard them all before. he doesn't say anything but he knows. your training will reflect YOUR results.

6)don't email the coach and say you wonder why your not training well as if you don't understand. every person that does this has not done their training. it's always the same.

7)send your results each week back to the coach, if you don't he knows nine times out of 10 that you've missed something. it's standard human behaviour, you cannot hide from the coach

8)every week the same people are consistent with their training and the same people are always missing. i won't name names but this will be reflected in your results. do not kid yourself. try to correct this now before it's too late

9)practice your race nutrition at every opportunity, those that don't will be talking about stomach upset in the race or no energy and stomach shutdown

10)practice doing your runs on a regular marked course so you can work out your pace and speed. you should know your body like the back of your hand. this is the key to a good long race. the same is true for the bike. try to understand the average times you do in training and racing and reflect this to heart rates.

Move to New York

From AAP in the Sydney Morning Herald

AUSTRALIA'S biggest cities have become less affordable over the past year, a global survey says.

The strong dollar and rising petrol prices have been blamed for the cities' rise up the ranks of the Economist Intelligence Unit's cost-of-living list.

Sydney was the least affordableAustralian city, rising from 25th place in the last survey to 16th.

This made it less affordable than New York, Rome and Beijing, but more affordable than the Norwegian capital, Oslo, the most expensive city, and Tokyo, ranked second.

congrats to all who raced on w end at canberra olympic,a hot day and some great results on a course with a dead swim, fairly dead road and exstra long run in my opinion

chris w ....2nd ...great swim bike and run...great effort!
tony dingo...7th...another solid race after threadbo last week but wasted alot of time with transition logistics
lisa marathon..1st ...again a great swim and bike and run coming on carrying 2kg less ...great race! after being star of busso on tv saterday yayyyy
jh...5th......never expecting too much with a dead swim giving away 6 minutes ish and felt slugish after a complete threadbo w end but good hitout
