Card for Jenny
As you can imagine, Jen has so many admirers and friends and though the family appreciate greatly any support and well wishers, this is a very personal time and rather than trying to phone through, Tony has made sure updates will be forwarded with Jen’s progress.
We would like to organise a BIG card for Jen and get it to Canberra on the weekend, so if you wouldn't mind letting your very vast list of athletes and friends know that we will be leaving a card at:
Cheeky Monkey
28 Clovelly Road Randwick
From: Tuesday May1st 12pm to Friday 4th 12pm
If anyone can’t make it to Cheeky Monkey by Friday, you can email a message to Janet on
janet@thebughouse.com.au
and all messages will be put together with the card.
I am sure that Jen will appreciate all the well wishes, as will her family and Tony.
Thanks again
Cheers
Janet

Cyclists injured in tour collision
Jessica Wright
A horror smash between a group of female road race cyclists and a four-wheel-drive vehicle near Stromlo Forest yesterday added to a tragic weekend on Canberra roads, which included the death of a 43-year-old woman.
When road race officials reached the site of the cyclists' pile-up on the Cotter Road shortly before 10am, several female cyclists lay injured on the road. One woman had catapulted directly into the oncoming car and had serious injuries.
The crash occurred as a group of riders crested a hill on the notoriously winding road.
Canberra Tour spokeswoman Tanya Saad said 25 cyclists had collided while on a twisting section of the road and had been thrown into the path of the 4WD.
"The majority of the bunch did come down but only a few riders came into the course of the oncoming car. One woman came off her bike and was in flight when she came into contact with the front side of the bull bar."
Three women were taken to hospital with one cyclist, of Sydney, in a critical condition.
The race was suspended immediately and all competitors checked for injuries and given counselling.
The driver of the 4WD was interviewed at the scene and police are conducting an investigation. No charges are expected to be laid.

Canberra Cycling Accident
Four-wheel drive hits Canberra cyclists
A four-wheel drive vehicle has hit a group of cyclists on Cotter Road in Canberra, causing serious injuries.
About five cyclists were in the group that was hit just after 10:00am AEST.
Two have been taken to the Canberra Hospital.
One is in a critical condition and the other in a serious condition.
The injured cyclists were believed to have been competing in the Canberra Cycling Tour.
ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesman Russell Buchanan says the section of road is quite dangerous.
"It's a very hard area, there's a hill and it drops down through some S-bends and it's notorious for incidents over the years," he said.
Canberra Cycling Tour spokeswoman Tanya Sard says the women's B race was suspended immediately after the accident.
She says all the competitors are being checked for injuries and are receiving counselling.
"They were all together and they saw it and the majority of the bunch did come down but only a few riders came into the course of the oncoming car," she said.

Importance of Protein
PROTEIN – It’s not for guys with big muscles.
"You don't make any fitness gains during exercise, all gains are made in the recovery period.”
Now without the good roughing up you give your body during exercise no adaptation would occur, but all the gains in fitness you get are actually made in recovery.
OK so recovery is important, but where does protein come into all of this, and hay, I eat fish and chicken right?
Yep and that's good, a well balanced diet is what you need but a little extra can pay off big time, here's how.
During exercise muscle's tissue is damaged and starts to break down, this also continues for several hours after exercise stops.
About 1 hour after exercise stops new muscle synthesis starts- its suppressed during exercise
Now lean muscle is what is going to make you faster and better at your sport. Lean muscle is good and you want it, yeah, but how do you get it?
Easy, you reduce muscle breakdown and you boost muscle synthesis. But having the correct amino acids in the blood stream at the right time is not easy to achieve and the timing is vital, this is why you can't just pop a chicken sandwich.
Also the correct amino acid and carbohydrate mix enhances glycogen replacement and recovery even further. It's a cleaver combination of amino acid profile, absorption speed, intake timing, amount and composition.
I know your time is precious, with work and training, so we have made it simple for you. There are two products from High5 that have been specifically designed to optimise all of these and so maximise recovery.
4:1 For use before and during exercise.
Protein Recovery For use immediately after exercise.

Really long swim
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — After 5,265 kilometres of exhaustion, sunburn, delirium and piranhas, a 52-year-old Slovenian successfully completed a swim down the Amazon River Saturday that could set a world record for distance — something he's already done three times before.
After nine weeks, Martin Strel arrived near the city of Belem, the capital of the jungle state of Para, ending a swim almost as long as the drive from Miami to Seattle. Mr. Strel averaged about 50 miles a day since beginning his odyssey at the source of the world's second-longest river in Peru on Feb. 1.

Jacqui's Day at Port Mac
I came out of the swim in 9th position in my age (60 females in 30-34 age group), moved up to around 5th-6th off the bike. I experienced very bad stomach cramping and felt sick the last 60k of the cycle. I was unable to take in any food (carbs) in the last 50-60k of the bike so was really worried how it was going to affect me for the 42k run I had ahead of me. But, I took it easy, sat up and sipped on water, hence stopped consuming carbs to get right for the run.
I managed to run into 3rd spot in the first 6k of the run then found myself in 2nd by the 11k mark (whilst in a lot of pain and very emotional). I slipped back into 3rd for the next 25k worried I wasn’t going to be able to finish but something happened and I slowly came closer to my competitor that was up in 2nd and the girls behind me were drifting back. It was up at the final turn around point, only 6-7k from the finish, I heard a spectator yell out “she’s only 40 secs in front of you...” and that was enough to make me kick! I felt like I broke out into a sprint and ran home as fast I as I possibly could finishing in 2nd place, over 3mins ahead of 3rd.
The support I had leading up to and during the race was unbelievable and so many people truly helped me get through this journey. James is the most amazing and supportive person in the whole world, especially over the past 12 months (and more!) – I owe him big time…...

Rounding out the day
***
Among other finishers on the day, Kristian and Chris obviously kept each other in sight at least through the finishing chute with Kristian crossing just four seconds ahead of Chris in 9:37.
For Kristian it was his second M-Dot this year after Malaysia and his second PB in as many races.
For Chris, tough as nails and one of the fiercest of competitors, he raced even though his preparation had been interrupted by injury.
A tip of the hat to Rod Grace, who crossed the line in 10.12.
[Both Kristian and Rod trained with the group and now are coaches in their own right, helping to spread the triathlon word! Chris has recently been training with Macca.]
Another Malaysian competitor who raced today, Stephen Firth, finished in 10:32.
