IMG has revamped how an athlete can gain a spot to race at Ironman Australia at Port Macquarie, eliminating the need to win a spot in a qualifying race.
The new system, which is similar to how Ironman races in the US work, will allow anyone to enter as of July 7th. The catch is that you must ``validate'' your spot by completing a half or a full-ironman ahead of the Port Mac race date.
In a related move, the qualifying series has been reworked for the 2007-2008 season with races in Tasmania and South Australia dropped from the schedule. The full Ironman in Busselton will be a validating race for Port Mac and there will be a new half ironman in a yet to be named location held in February 2008.
